Angus James Smith founded "Angus Smith Marine" in 1965. His love of fishing provided the respite from his busy public life as Mayor of the city of Townsville, a position he held from 1952 to 1967.

His first outboard was a 1.5hp British Seagull, which he and family used from their beach hut at Cungulla. He saw the future recreational potential of outboard motors and his Marine Retail and service company was formed.

Evinrude motors had established an Australian manufacturing facility in Bankstown, N.S.W. 75hp was the largest outboard in those days. Physically it was as large as the currant 250hp outboards and to own one of these was a real status symbol. The big sellers were the 18hp and 25hp Evinrude models rigged to a 12ft tinnie for estuary fishing, which is abundant in our waters.

Ian Smith, third son of Angus, was keen to learn the business. He spent six years working with Evinrude and Johnson motors.

Beginning on the assembly line and graduating through the ranks of both service and sales representation to become service manager with their New Zealand operations, returning in 1975 to take over the family business. With this background, the company takes pride in providing quality service.

Mr. Robert Crump joined Angus Smith Marine in 1968 and in 1972 moved to Ingham as manager of the new branch. His service background and knowledge gained through the years has been invaluable to the boating community in the Herbert valley.

Mr. Gary Lancashire joined as a junior technician in 1974. Gary has gone on to become one of Australia's premier master technicians. He has been twice honored with the Evinrude and Johnson Master Technician of Australia. He heads a dedicated service team who pride themselves in delivering the highest quality service and total quality on new boat installations. In his words, "There is only one winner with a quality installation... He who pays for it."

B.R.P. (Bombardier Recreational products) lead the world in outboard 2 stroke Technology. Evinrude direct injection technology began being developed Back in the late 1980"s.
